Beyond Mannahatta - the Welikia Project

On September 14, 2010, the Wildlife Conservation Society will launch the Welikia Project, an effort to document the historical ecology of all of New York City and compare it to the current biodiversity of the city. “Welikia” means “my good home” in Lenape, the Native American language spoken in the New York City region 400 years ago, when Henry Hudson ushered in European exploration and settlement of the area. To learn more, log-on to our revamped website at www.welikia.org on September 14. For those of you who loved Mannahatta, all the maps, educational materials and discussion boards will still be available, along with new materials reflecting Welikia for the Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn and Staten Island.

Dutch issue Mannahatta/Manhattan 5 Euro coin

President Barack Obama received a commerative Mannahatta coin from the Dutch Prime Minister J.P. Balkenende during the US-European Union summit on April 5, 2009. 350,000 copies of the five euro coin will be in circulation in Europe this summer; and gold and silver commerative coins are available based on Ronald van Tienhoven’s striking design of lower Manhattan in 1609 and 2009. The Mannahatta Project is proud to announce the launch of its new website, themannahattaproject.org, and if you are reading this page, then you area already here! We created this website to make information from the Mannahatta Project readily available to you, the public. This website has something for everyone– teachers and other educators, park rangers, environmental managers, urban planners, city developers, GIS professionals, architects, science students, scientists, researchers, residents of New York City and tourists alike. With this website, you can: read about the history of the Mannahatta Project from its conception in the brain of landscape ecologist Dr. Eric Sanderson, obtain the Mannahatta elementary school level curriculum (free for download), access the Mannahatta Project’s scientific data (free for download), and explore Mannahatta (Manhattan 400 years ago) with our brand new, interactive map — use it to see what the heart of NYC looked like before Europeans arrived, when this “island of many hills” was home to the Lenape people and full of wildlife and their wild habitats!
